Visualising global telecoms investment data

Turning complex country-level telecoms data into compelling, interactive visualisations for global policymakers.

Client context

Our client is an international telecoms body representing over 500 global telecoms firms. It advises members on best practice and counsels heads of government on spectrum, coverage, bandwidth and due diligence. The organisation gathers enormous amounts of data and employs PhD statisticians to inform policy recommendations worldwide.

The business problem

The body had developed an internal proof of concept for ranking major countries on telecoms investment readiness, but needed help presenting that data to its members and target audience. If the ranking could be communicated clearly, it could show each territory how it compared with its neighbours and how policy changes could attract more investment.

What we did

Red Olive identified the most compelling statistics and patterns, then built an interactive dashboard using Tableau to visualise each metric intuitively. We used geospatial maps and other visualisations, restructuring the country data to verify the output was correct.

The solution was delivered in just two weeks for demonstration at Mobile World Congress. Red Olive then trained client staff so they could develop the dashboard further in-house.

The results

The proof of concept was successfully demonstrated at Mobile World Congress and refined into a finished product used by the organisation’s consultants in face-to-face meetings with senior business leaders and government officials worldwide.

Looking ahead

The proof of concept was successfully demonstrated at Mobile World Congress and refined into a finished product used by the organisation’s consultants in face-to-face meetings with senior business leaders and government officials worldwide.

The dashboard is now used globally to help countries understand how changes to their regulatory frameworks could attract wider international investment and make their markets more attractive to the telecoms industry.
