Realising the data potential of a FTSE 100 food producer

Building the business case and roadmap for enterprise data transformation at a major UK food business.

Client context

Our client is a FTSE 100 food producer that buys from 3,500 farms nationwide and satisfies a third of the UK annual requirements for a staple product. As a traditional business, it relied on conventional processes and its IT department was spending 30–40% of its time fixing data problems caused by process issues.

The business problem

Different parts of the business were drawing on different systems for the same metrics, creating multiple versions of the truth. Nobody was accountable for some data sets, while others were trapped inside siloed applications. The organisation needed a strategy to deliver more relevant insight, but 90% of this could only be achieved through improved data handling.

What we did

Red Olive helped flesh out the roadmap and develop the business case. We spoke with stakeholders across the organisation, devised an enterprise data model, and proposed a delivery sequence with estimates and a design. Using the BEAM* methodology, we prioritised 160 use cases down to six with the greatest cross-business impact.

The results

The board granted funding and signed off the wider transformation programme. Red Olive helped the business understand the art of the possible, mapping future data capabilities to a business context stakeholders could understand.

Looking ahead

With funding secured, the in-house team is moving ahead with implementation. Red Olive’s strategy, roadmap and enterprise data model continue to guide the programme.
